I thought we might try a tasty experiment today after all of your work in NAPLAN this morning!
The aim of the experiment is to discover whether the colour of the jelly has an impact upon the flavour of the jelly. One part of the experiment will involve blindfolding some members of our class to see if this changes their opinion on the flavour. During this lesson you will be invited to take part in adding your predictions to a collaborative document. Using this document, all of the students in our class can make comments and predictions at the same time. You will be able to see each of these on your screen as we experiment. Now that we have completed the experiment...
Did you notice that when you were blindfolded it was difficult to decide which flavour jelly you were tasting? You knew there was blue, green and red jelly and you were probably trying to figure out which of these colours matched the flavour in your mouth.
When we looked at the colours and tasted the jelly, the colour and the flavour made sense. Were you expecting an orange flavour when you tasted the orange jelly? As I look at your predictions on the collaborative document, I can see that most of you predicted the orange jelly would taste like an orange.
Take a look at the photograph I took as I was making the red, blue and green jelly that you tasted while you were blindfolded. What does this tell you about the colour of a food and the flavour that you expect? Were you trying to pick a colour when the jelly was in your mouth? Make a comment in the comment box and post for others to see.
The red, blue and green jelly that you tried were all the same flavour. I used 3 packets of lemonade jelly and added food colouring. Was your brain searching for a raspberry or lime flavour because you knew that there was red and green on the plate?
Task: Complete the following sections of your scientific report in your Integration book (we got this ready of Monday). You may work with a partner if you like. We have written these reports as a class group, this will be your first time attempting this without guidance from the teacher. The purpose is to prepare you for your science boards where you will have to write independently. You need to write:
- The materials
- The method (steps)
- The results (we already drew the chart)
- The conclusion - based on the aim: Does the colour of the Jelly impact upon the flavour of the Jelly? Does your brain associate a colour with a flavour? Write about your experiences.
