I thought we might try a tasty experiment today after all of your work in NAPLAN this morning!
The aim of the experiment is to discover whether the colour of the jelly has an impact upon the flavour of the jelly. One part of the experiment will involve blindfolding some members of our class to see if this changes their opinion on the flavour. During this lesson you will be invited to take part in adding your predictions to a collaborative document. Using this document, all of the students in our class can make comments and predictions at the same time. You will be able to see each of these on your screen as we experiment. To access this document, click on the link that I have emailed you.
If you have a problem accessing this document through your email, click here: Link to collaborative document
I hope you have fun and enjoy the jelly!
Now that we have completed the experiment...
Did you notice that when you were blindfolded it was difficult to decide which flavour jelly you were tasting? You knew there was blue, green and red jelly and you were probably trying to figure out which of these colours matched the flavour in your mouth.
When we looked at the colours and tasted the jelly, the colour and the flavour made sense. Were you expecting an orange flavour when you tasted the orange jelly? As I look at your predictions on the collaborative document, I can see that most of you predicted the orange jelly would taste like an orange.
Take a look at the photograph I took as I was making the red, blue and green jelly that you tasted while you were blindfolded. What does this tell you about the colour of a food and the flavour that you expect? Were you trying to pick a colour when the jelly was in your mouth? Make a comment in the comment box and post for others to see.
The red, blue and green jelly that you tried were all the same flavour. I used 3 packets of lemonade jelly and added food colouring. Was your brain searching for a raspberry or lime flavour because you knew that there was red and green on the plate?
Task: Complete the following sections of your scientific report in your Integration book (we got this ready of Monday). You may work with a partner if you like. We have written these reports as a class group, this will be your first time attempting this without guidance from the teacher. The purpose is to prepare you for your science boards where you will have to write independently. You need to write:
- The materials
- The method (steps)
- The results (we already drew the chart)
- The conclusion - based on the aim: Does the colour of the Jelly impact upon the flavour of the Jelly? Does your brain associate a colour with a flavour? Write about your experiences.
Good luck, I look forward to reading your responses. Remember, this is practice for your science boards so you need to do the best job that you can.
i think the green jelly might tast like lime
ReplyDeleteI think this jelly will taste like lime
ReplyDeleteJacina and I thought it would taste like lime because it's green.
ReplyDeleteI think that the green jelly will taste like lime.
ReplyDeleteI think that the green jelly will taste like lime because the jelly is green :)
ReplyDeleteyum yum yum it taste like oranges now i cant wait to taste the green jelly
ReplyDeleteI think that it will taste like lime because of how it looks
ReplyDeletei think that the green jelly will taste like lime
ReplyDeleteWhat does this tell you about the colour of a food and the flavour that you expect?
ReplyDeleteI expected that the colour of the Jelly would affect the taste and it did. When I tasted the blue Jelly I wasn’t that sure of what it would taste like. I thought it would taste like bubble gum or lemonade. It tasted like lemonade. Then when we did the red Jelly I predicted that it would taste like raspberry and it did and then when we had to predict what the green jelly would taste like I said that it would taste like lime and it did.
Were you trying to pick a colour when the jelly was in your mouth?
Yes I was trying to pick the colour when it was in my mouth and you could tell what flavour it was although some of them were harder to pick than others.
Thanks Bianca,
DeleteThis might explain why it was more difficult with some more than others...
The red, blue and green jelly that you tried while you were blindfolded were all the same flavour. I used 3 packets of lemonade jelly and just added food colour to make you think they had a different flavour. Was it difficult to decide which flavour you were tasting when you were blindfolded? Were you searching for strawberry or lime flavours based on the fact that your brain knew there were red and green on the plate?
I thought that the colour of the Jelly would effect the flavour of the Jelly because you can buy food colouring with different flavour and Obvisly the colour of the Jelly would effect the flavour and my prediction was correct.
ReplyDeleteIt was difficult to predict the flavour of the Jelly because your use to seeing the colour of the Jelly and knowing what flavour it would be.
Thanks Jessica,

Yes l was looking for those flavours in in my brain though it was very hard to choose from when you where tryting to think of the colours that you had to choose from.
ReplyDeleteI really think that was a really fun and exiting experiment thank you for making all the jelly l enjoyed it. Mums now got jelly in the fridge because I loved it!
You're welcome Jacina, I'm glad you enjoyed this experiment and you have made some great connections between the aim of the experiment and the results/conclusion. Enjoy the jelly your mum made!
ReplyDeleteThank you heaps
