Poems We Like

Jacina chose this poem by Kenn Nesbit to share. Click the link: My parents sent me to the store

The Man From Snowy River

Today we will read this well-known poem from a picture book, listen to the poem read aloud online and watch a scene from the movie. What is your response to Banjo Patterson's famous Australian poem?

Watch scenes from the movie and listen to the poem being read aloud.

Jim's Ride: A scene from the movie that might help you understand the poem a little more.

Read the poem here

Now read the poem for yourself. Does it make more sense? Do you understand more of the vocabulary now?

Find out more: The history of the poem

Now find out a little more about the history behind the writing of this poem and the impact that it has had upon the Australian people. Did you know that Banjo Patterson and The Man from Snowy River are featured on our $10 note?

Homework Week 3 (29/7/13)

Forensic Science

 Inherited and other traits:

Task 1: Research some genetic traits that people have. Some examples include
  • Darwin's point
  • Hitchhikers thumb
  • Widows peak
  • Cleft chin
Task 2: Take a close look at yourself in the mirror. List some interesting aspects about your face (perhaps you have not noticed them before!). Some of these traits are inherited, others are individual. This is what makes you unique.

Task 3: List which of the following apply to you:
1. I have detached earlobes
2. I have a hitchhikers thumb
3. I can roll my tongue
4. I have straight hair
5. I have hair on my knuckles
6. I have a widows peak
7. I have freckles on my face
8. I have dimples when I smile
9. When I clasp my hands together my left thumb is on top
10. My big toe is longer than my other toes
11. I am right handed
12. I have a dimple in my chin
13. I can wiggle my ears

Task 4: Make a comparison graph, comparing yourself to the other people in your family. A simple bar or column graph will be fine. Which traits are the same? You might like to include your grandparents or even your great-grandparents as traits can sometimes skip a generation (bring your graph on Friday)

Task 5: Visit the following website:http://flashface.ctapt.de/
Select from a range of head, hair, eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, chin and jaw options to form an identikit image of a face. Print it or copy and paste it to make a wanted poster.

Hope you have fun Mini-Forensic Scientists! (Due on Friday)

Great Inventions

Great inventions have been created when people have seen a problem and set about trying to solve it. They are also created to make life easier. Think about some great inventions:
* The first aeroplanes
* Electricity
* Early telephones
* Ways to make it over Niagara Falls alive (I'm serious there is a museum in Canada devoted to this).
* Early vehicles
* Clothing (think Antarctica)
* Sporting equipment
* Bicycles
* Bread making techniques
* Keeping time

Your task: Research one type of invention and its history. Write a paragraph about the invention, its inventor(s) and the way it has been developed through time. Add the paragraph to the blog. This is the link to the Collaborative Document. You can add pictures and more information here for your class mates to share. Happy thinking!

A reminder: Don't be a bystander

Building positive relationships is very important. We need to show positive leadership skills by making sure we are not 'BYSTANDERS' when it comes to bullying.  If you see or hear of any name calling, unfair treatment, exclusion from games or pushing and shoving, STAND UP and MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Making Lemonade

Today we wrote a procedure report about 'How to make lemonade'. This is the recipe we used as some of you wanted to try this at home. You can change it according to your taste preference. Enjoy!

2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup cold water
2 teaspoons white sugar

If you like your lemonade fizzy, you could use sparkling water.

Year 5 Science Boards

Can you write the topic of your science board so that we can check that nobody else is doing the same thing (Caitlyn and Chloe M, you are doing the same topic but you're doing a different experiment). Comment under 'Science boards' in the comment box

The Jelly Experiement

I thought we might try a tasty experiment today after all of your work in NAPLAN this morning!

The aim of the experiment is to discover whether the colour of the jelly has an impact upon the flavour of the jelly. One part of the experiment will involve blindfolding some members of our class to see if this changes their opinion on the flavour. During this lesson you will be invited to take part in adding your predictions to a collaborative document. Using this document, all of the students in our class can make comments and predictions at the same time. You will be able to see each of these on your screen as we experiment. To access this document, click on the link that I have emailed you.

If you have a problem accessing this document through your email, click here: Link to collaborative document

I hope you have fun and enjoy the jelly!

Now that we have completed the experiment...
Did you notice that when you were blindfolded it was difficult to decide which flavour jelly you were tasting? You knew there was blue, green and red jelly and you were probably trying to figure out which of these colours matched the flavour in your mouth.

When we looked at the colours and tasted the jelly, the colour and the flavour made sense. Were you expecting an orange flavour when you tasted the orange jelly? As I look at your predictions on the collaborative document, I can see that most of you predicted the orange jelly would taste like an orange.

Take a look at the photograph I took as I was making the red, blue and green jelly that you tasted while you were blindfolded. What does this tell you about the colour of a food and the flavour that you expect? Were you trying to pick a colour when the jelly was in your mouth? Make a comment in the comment box and post for others to see.
The red, blue and green jelly that you tried were all the same flavour. I used 3 packets of lemonade jelly and added food colouring. Was your brain searching for a raspberry or lime flavour because you knew that there was red and green on the plate?

Task: Complete the following sections of your scientific report in your Integration book (we got this ready of Monday). You may work with a partner if you like. We have written these reports as a class group, this will be your first time attempting this without guidance from the teacher. The purpose is to prepare you for your science boards where you will have to write independently. You need to write:
  • The materials
  • The method (steps)
  • The results (we already drew the chart)
  • The conclusion - based on the aim: Does the colour of the Jelly impact upon the flavour of the Jelly? Does your brain associate a colour with a flavour? Write about your experiences.
Good luck, I look forward to reading your responses. Remember, this is practice for your science boards so you need to do the best job that you can.

Our School

Our school is located in a beautiful coastal village on the South Coast of NSW, Australia. We are truly blessed to live in such a beautiful place!

We have been photographing some of the natural spaces which are just outside our school gate. Obviously we have some budding future photographers in our class! There are more photographs on the 'Our Work' page.
